RE-LICENSING OF MOTOR VEHICLES

START MADE WITH WORK LAST MONDAY NEW PETROL RATION SYSTEM ' The re-licensng of motor vehicles registered in the Waihi postal dis trict began on Monday, and motorists, when-they receive their new motor plates, are being issued with new petrol coupons for use as from June 1. The pates this year arc Venetian red, with white numbers. Petrol coupons now held will be • come obsolete after May 31, and no further coupons will he issued to owners of cars until they have paid their license fees for the 1940-41 year. When the owner has paid His fee and is receiving the plates, he will lie given coupons appropriate to the horse—power class to which his vehicle belongs. The colours and quantities for which they are good are as follows: One-gallon coupons, with violet, background, for motorcyclists. Two-gallon coupons, with red background, for cars under 9.5 li.p. Three—gallon coupons, with yellow background, for ears between 9.5 h.p. and 14.5 h.p. Four-gallon coupons, with green background, for cars over 14.5 h.p. The coupons will be perforated in sheets, as are the present tickets, and 36, suilicient for a year, if the rationing is not altered, will be handed to each ear owner. The coupons have been designed so as to make possible forgery diflicult, being overprinted on a coloured background, which is

hard to copy. Owners of private trucks who have previously been issued with coupons will, in future, require to make application for an oil fuel license in the ordinary way. Cars which do not use petrol and whose owners do net contribute petrol tax, arc liable to pay a mileage tax.
