RACING NEWS

WELLINGTON MEETING OPENS TO-DAY

NO'JES ON THE RUNNERS

BIG FIELDS ENGAGED (By "The Guesser") The winter meeting of the Wellington Racing Club will be commenced at Trentham to-day and with the large fields engaged the club should enjoy a successful meeting. After the recent rain the track will be holding. The acceptors, with notes thereon are as follows: — MARIRI HACK AND HUNTER'S' STEEPLECHASE Of £300; about 2i miles Flashilght 10.11, Monastic 10. S, Kahunoke 10.3, Chile 9.12, Primak 9.11, King Mestor 9.6, Royal Romance 9.4, Nightbound 9.2, Acron 9.0, Monteloo 9.0.

The top-weight, Flashlight, a winner at his only two starts over country this season, is a possible winner. He is still improving. Monastic has had only one outing of recent months but in spite of this he is a fair performer and with Kahunoke and Primak will supply the most opposition to Flashlight. King Mestor is also a possibility. The favourites may be

Flashlight, Kahunoke, Monastic.

WOBURN HANDICAP Of £300; 6 furlongs

Jazz Boy 10.2, Second Innings 9.3, Lady Leigh 9.3, Paul Robeson 9.J, Captain Tudor 9.1, Superior Guard 8.11, Advance Plane S.ll, Reasonable 8.10, Earl's Court S.lO, Potent S.lO, Jan Ridd S.S, Great Pal 8.7, Sen Acre 5.6, Gay Hunting 8.4, Bluffer 5.3, Hunting Chorus 8.3, Gladium 8.2, Mother-in-law 8.2, Fairy Dale 8.0, Great Quex 8.0, Kinloch 8.0, Sing Lee S.O, Sly Fox 8.0, Pursuit S.O, Quexona S.O.

This field is full of possibilities. Second Innings, unbeaten in his last four starts, will again be hard to beat. Lady Leigh is another consistent performer who must be respected. Paul Robeson, Reasonable, Potent, Jan Ridd and Hunting Chorus are others in the event who possess excellent chances. Despite their poundage, the public may support those at the top of the handicap.

Second Innings, Lady Leigh, Reasonable.

VITTORIA HURDLE HANDICAP £300; 11 miles

Sunee 10.9, Middle 10.4, Taumau 10.3, Curie 10.1, Scrap 9.11, Tail Light 9.11, Sinking Fund 9.10, King Mestor 9.10, Valrath 9.6, Tareha 9.6, Contact 9.6, Black Man 9.4, Entheos 9.2, Chaste 9.0, Greek Arma 9.0, Sunder 9.0, Jewish Lad 9.0, Laggard 9.0, Lustral 9.0.

A large field of hack hurdlers has accepted in this event. Middle has been galloping well on the tracks, while Tail Light is an improver with an undeniable chance. Sinking Fund may now have more experience over the battens and with the distance to suite him may run a good race. Maumau is a good type for this class of hurdle and Valarth, an unknown quantity, may surprise. The best supported will perhaps be

Tail Light, Taumau, Sinking Fund

STEWARDS' HANDICAP Of £4 00; 6 furlongs

Catalogue 9.13, Rollicker 9.7, Big Dook 9.5, Notium 9.5, Mittie 94. Rebel Mate 9.4, Pakanui 9.2, Prince Acre 9.2, Debham 9.0, Triune S.ll, Great Hope 5.9, Maori Song 5.9, Hunting Blood S.S, Farland B.S, Golden Blonde B.S, Haughty Winner 5.7, Essex 8.5, Gaily 8.3, Collodion S.O, Matoru S.O, Merial 8,0, Moneyless 8.0, Sweet Rose S.O.

Many smart sprinters are included in the field. Most of them race well under winter conditions. The pick of the top of the handicap are Rollicker and Rebel Mate. Prince Acre runs well at Trentham and Maori Song, who has been rather disappointing in his last few starts, has a chance to make amends here. The brilliant Hunting Blood is capable of winning all the way and may be responsible for cracking other smart beginners who may attempt to go with him. Farland is one to whom this would apply. The popular fancies may eventually be

Maori Song, Hunting Blood, Farland.

WELLINGTON STEEPLECHASE Of £1000; about 31 miles Clarion Call 11.4, All Irish 10.9, Red Sun 10.7, Erination 10.2, Manawatu 9.13, Santoft 9.13, Bryce Street 9.7, Kinkle 9.5, Smiling Thru 9.5, Brigadore 9.2, Kahunoke 9.0.' All Irish won well at his last tempt and is at the peak of his form. Clarion Call is brilliant over shorter distances. Erination, whose latest form has been excellent, looks to be the probable favourite, and most onposition may come from the imprqvr ing Bryce Street, who possesses a great chance after his recent performances. Kinkle and Smiling Thru are both -winners at their last start and on a holding track may make it very difficult for those above them! Perhaps backers may decide on

Bryce Street, Erination, All Irish." ITRENTHAM HURDLE HANDICAR, Of £500; IS miles ' . Silk Sox 10. S, Donegal 10. g, Gourt Yard 10.4, John Charles 10.2, Full of Scotch 10.2, Charade 10.2, Kilberis 9.11, Pango 9.9, Beau Gallante 9.6, Aurora's Love 9.4, Spencjer 9.2, Southern Blood 9,0, -- Silk Sox may improve on his pre-

< Continued loot or next pa§e.>

vious few starts. Donegal and Courtyard have strong claims and this applies to John Charles also. However, until he is beaten the favourite will be the vastly-improved Full of Scotch. Aurora's Love and Spender are two likely ones near the bottom of the handicap. A trio who will be fancied are

Full of Scotch, Silk Sox, Spender.

WHYTE HANDICAP Of £500; 1 mile

Master Cyklon 8.12, De Friend 8.12, Brazen King 8.12, Arctic Kins 8.11, Enge 8.11, Ned Cuttle 8.8, Quadroon 8.6, Alunga 8.4, Korero 8.4, Lazybones 8.2, Monipere 8.1, Haughty Winner 8.1, Airam 8.0, Lady Montana 8.0, Legatee 7.13, Conveyer 7.11, General Ruse 7.7, Joe Louis 7.7, Loombination 7.7, Moneyless 7.7, Wagner 7.7. This event is very open and at least seven or eight candidates have good winning prospects. Enge, who runs well on this course, is a great winter performer and conditions are sure to be to his liking. Quadroon is a good performer on heavy tracks. The South Island horse, Lazybones, makes a strong appeal as he will fight on very solidly and the distance should see him at his best. Haughty Winner, Airam and Lady Montana are all likely to receive good support. Those in at the finish may be

Lazybones, Enge, Quadroon.

TE ARO HANDICAP Of £300; 1 mile

Requiem, 9-8, Puroto 9.6, Rotoma 9 3 Hunting Mint 9.1, Royal Record 8 l'o, Valantua 8.9, El Meynell 8.9. Sunbeam 8.7, Lord Quick 8.7, Gold Glare 8.7, Dark Red 8.0, Raroa 8.0, The Wrecker 8.0, Revival 8.0. The Te Rapa winner, El Meynell, will carry a lot of confidence and is a likely improver. Requiem will bo suited by the class and Rotoma and Hunting Mint are two who will race well on heavy tracks. Valantua is a good southern candidate who won last start. In what should be a good betting race the favourites may be

Valentua, El Meynell, Rotoma.
