GERMAN ARMY PURGE
SECRET MEMORANDUM DISCLOSED HITLER CRITICISED PARTICIPATING IN SPANISH WAR Australian and N.Z Cable. LONDON. April 10. The “Sunday Chronicle” publishes what it describes as a secret memorandum written by high officers of the German Army, the discovery of which led to the recent army purge. The statement complains that the new army has been weakened by participation in the Spanish war and declares that every new German war weapon has been rushed to Spain for testing. Russian ’planes and tanks, it is said, proved superior to Germany’s. The memorandum outspokenly criticises Herr Hitler’s policy and says the theory of smashing an enemy in one quick blow is exploded. Germany’s interference in Spain had consolidated Britain, France and Russia against Germany, it is declared. The document adds that Britain and France are strong enough to stop Italy and Germany in Spain if they want to.
