WIN FOR TECHNICAL OLD BOYS

Perfect weather again favoured the Waihi Rugby Union on Saturday lor the first representative match of the season, the visiting team being the Auckland Technical Old Boys who were victorious by 14 points to 9 after an interesting and well-con-tested match. The combination of the Aucklanders was the deciding factor and though Waihi put up a creditable showing considering that the team had not played together before and that it was only the third playing Saturday of the season, the handling was not as lively and confident as that of the visitors. Theteams were as follows: Technical Old Boys: Raymond, Murray, McAdams, Briely, Turbctt, Murdoch, McKenzie, Lockwood, - Mulverhill, Crump, Kean, Cooper, Niclioll, Ashley and Montgomerie. Waihi: Pratt, Murray, McConnell, Wairepo, Findlay, Wharapapa, Price, Pearce, Berryman, S. Walford, J. Walford, R. Radford, Jesney, Keane and Johns.

RUN OF THE GAME

Within a few minutes of the opening of play the Technical Old Boys forced down when the Wailii pack kicked over the line. The home men returned to the attack and the ball went out to Wairepo, following a scrum, and he cut through nicely to score, Radford failing with the kick —Wailii 3, Technical Old Boys 0. Wharepapa made an opening for the home team, but Raymond, McAdams and Murray returned to half-way from where Brierly received, short kicked and picked up again to run through for a try, Murdoch converting.—Technical Old Boys 5, Wailii 3. The home men broke through again but handling in the scrum gave a penalty kick against them, Pratt re- ; ceiving and returning the leather. Findlay, ran down field with the hall and kicked, Brierly, McAdams and Murray bringing back for a line-out in the home quarter and McConnell ].. cling to touch to got Wailii out of trouble. From the throw-in Wharepapa received and made a strong run to be tackled on the scoring line, the full-back kicking clear before Findlay, who was close in support, could touch down. Johns and J. Walford dribbled back, McAdams | blocking and passing out but Murray j knocking on as he attempted to gath|er in. The visiting pack carried on | over the scoring mark and from a j five-yards scrum the defenders liook- ! ed, Price kicking but the Auckland- | ers returning and Wailii eventually i forcing. The Aucklanders’ combination worked well till a dropped pass lost them the ball, McConnell getting away with the oval at his toe till stopped by Raymond, the latter find- ! ing touch in the home half. WliaroI papa and Findlay regained the I ground and McConnell was tackled ! in possession in the Technical Old I Boys’ corner, the ball going to tile | Aucklanders from a line-out and a , handy kick clearing. Good tackling ! by Murray and McConnell blocked a | further Auckland attack but Murray j (T. 0.8.) returned, Price however, j finding touch. Turbott, McAdams ! and Brierly cut through for a scrum under the posts but picking out gave a penalty against them. Several further Auckland back rushes were broken by the good tackling of the defenders and half-time came with 1 play in the home quarter. THE SECOND HALF Mid-field play saw Radford break I away, but McKenzie sending his backs away following a line-out, the scene of action returned to the home corner, a scrum penalty relieving. The Technical Old Boys’ backs continued to handle smartly and from half-way McAdams passed to Brierly who beat several opponents to score behind the posts, the kick failing.— Technical Old Boys S, Wailii 3. A dribbling rush by the Auckland pack kept the ball moving towards Wailii’s goal line till S. Walford went down on the leather, a long kick followed up by Jesney and Keane taking them to the visitors’ twenty-five but the combination of the defenders enabled them to quickly clear their territory, the return attack being eventually stopped by Findlay. Another Auckland advance being broken up by Waihi’s tackling, Wharepapa made a good run to score well out, the kick failing.—Technical Old Boys 8, Wailii 6. A long kick had Wailii defending, but Wharepapa and Findlay turned the tables, the leather being finally kicked over the scoring line and forced. Murray relieved for Wailii again a little later by a long punt which found touch in the Aucklanders’ corner, Radford putting a penalty kick over the bar.— Wailii 9, Technical Old Boys S. With play in the Aucklanders’ half, McAdams and Murray ran strongly and a short kick beating the home fullback, Brierly picked up and went over to score, the kick being disallowed.—Technical Old Boys 11, Wailii 9. Following solid forward play at half-way Pearce punted to the corner, a line-kick carrying back | to half-way and again all the visit- ! ing backs handled in succession, Brierly showing a good turn of speed to cross for a try. The kick failed. Technical Old Boys 14, Wailii 9. McKenzie and Turbptt reached the home twenty-five with the hall "'bore the forwards packed down, I Wailii kicking through and reaching the opposite end of the field, the final bell sounding with the home pack attacking strongly. Mr R. Walsh was in charge of the game.
