AUCKLAND RACES

AUTUMN MEETING NEXT SATURDAY LARGE FIELDS ENGAGED NOTES ON THE RUNNERS (By “The Guesser”) With large fields engaged, everything points to a successful opening of the Auckland Racing Club’s autumn meeting on Saturday at Ellerslie. Appended are the acceptances with notes on horses expected to run prominently in their respective events:—

PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP Of £350; 1J miles.

Greek Shepherd 9.2, Nun Nicer 5.7, Mungatoon 5.6, Royal Appellant 5.2, Kilberis 7.13, Gay Broney 7.9, Lagoon 7.5, Bonny Gay 7.7, Korero 7.7, Kelly 7.6, Floodtide 7.6, Maine 7.3, Tahurangi 7.0, King Musk 7.0, Knight of Australia 7.0, King Tut 7.0. Arawa Rose 7.0, Whakapara 7.0, United 7.0.

Greek Shepherd has a lot of weight for a three-year-old but the field is not a strong one and he should be there or thereabouts at the finish, while the Mungatoon-Lagoon bracket will have friends. Royal Appellant will have to show imrovement on his Whangarei form to have a chance. Gay Broney, Bonny Gay, Kilberis, Flood Tide and King Musk are all prospects, especially the latter, who appears to be near his best. Investors may select

Greek Shepherd, Kins Musk, Lagoon-Mung'atoon, (bracket)

GREAT NORTHERN OAKS STAKES Of £500; for tliree-year-olds; li miles. Fulojoy 8.10, Galilee 8.10, Lady Graceful 8.10, Libra S.lO, Light Comedy 8.10, Oratory 8.10, Palardo S.lO, Parquet 8.10, Persian Lady S.lO, Tidalia S.lO, Valise 8.10.

As usual, the field is a weak one and anything may win. Lady Graceful is the only runner to have shown any form over this distance and she will probably start a warm favourite. They may finish

Lady Graceful, Galilee, Oratory,

BRIGHTON HURDLES Of £400; 2 miles.

Soloist 12.3, King’s Archer 11.2, Master Musk 10.9, AVee Pat 10.8, Emancipation 10.2, Scotch Nation 10.0, Prince of Orange 9.12, Modern Maid 9.9, Victor Colima 9.4, Lap Up 9.4, Clan Ronald 9.3, Billy Boy 9.1, Booklaw 9.0. Some good junipers are engaged here and it should be one of the best races of the meeting. On the recently concluded Auckland country circuit three hurdlers stood out — Soloist, Master Musk and Scotch Nation—and perhaps the most impressive was Soloist, whose win at Te Aroha under the steadier of 12st was a first-class effort. He now has to carry three pounds more in a much stronger field, but nevertheless should again he in the firing line. Master Musk is a greatly improved hurdler and should be at his best by Saturday, while Scotch Nation made a convincing debut over the small sticks at Paeroa and is an ideal type for this game. He has much more pace than the average hurdler and his prospects look bright. Wee Pat has not raced for some time but has been working well on the track, and King’s Archer, a winner at the Ellerslie summer meeting, is net without a chance. Modern Maid and Lap Up read as the best of the others. The order of favouritism may be Soloist, Master Musk, Scotch Nation,

EASTER HANDICAP, Of £800; 1 mile.

Spiral S.ll, Rereatu S.S, Nun Nicer 5.3, Friesland 8.1, Refresher S.l, Namakia 7.13, Royal Appellant 7.12, Epris 7.12, Kilberis 7.9, Gay Rose 7.8, Sinking Fund 7.8, Grateful 7.3, Gay Broney 7.3, Bonny Gay 7.3, Royal Secret 7.2, Gay Seton 7.0, Crooning 7.0, Happy Landing 7.0, Sirona 7.0, Roman Mascot 7.0, Adalene 7.0, Valspear 7.0, Tonnerre 7.0, Star Artist 7.0, 1-laut Monde 7.0.

A large hut by no means brilliant field will contest the main event of the day, and probably the absence of a top-notcher accounts for its size. The pick of the top-weights may be Rereatu, whose best efforts have been registered on this track, but Friesland, second in the Thompson Handicap (one mile), has, if started, a great chance to win an important race. Namakia is very smart and that she runs out a good mile was shown when she finished a close third in the Christmas Handicap with only four pounds less weight than she has now to carry. A recent winner, her prospect is an excellent one. Epris is a Winter Cup winner whose recent form has been quite good and will justify substantial support, while Nun Nicer, Gratelui, Sinking Fund, Bonny Gay, Crooning and Royal Secret must all be regarded as in the running. When the totalisator closes those to carry most money may bo

Friesland Namakia, Epris.

GREAT NORTHERN CHAMPAGNE STAKES Of £000; for two-year-olds; 0 furlongs Anion 8.10, Black Friar 8.10. Cheval do Voice 8.10, Cricket 8.10, Cay Streak 8.10, Maxown 8.10, Ned Cuttle 8.10, Notium S.lO, Quadroon! 8.10, Wagner 8.10, Birthday Party 8.8, Candieo S.S, Golden Blonde B.S, Golden Sheila S.S, Merial 8.8, Moquette 8.8, Queen’s Counsel S.S,

The absence of all the crack two-year-olds makes this race a difficult one for investors, but recent form says most for the chances of Merial, Ned Cuttle, Golden Blonde, Birthday Party and Wagner, while it may be

recalled that Anion showed promising form earlier in the season. Backers may prefer

Merial, Anion, Golden Blonde.

MANGERE STEEPLES Of £275; 2i miles

Diamond 11.8, Forest Glow 10.11, Sandy Dix 10.11, London 9.11, The Hiker 9.8, Puccini 9.8, Town Beauty 9.8, Semiarch 9.6, Irish Comet 9.1, Bells of Bow 9.1, Domo 9.0, Roxy 9.0, Adsum 9.0. Despite his steadying weight, Diamond is not without prospects, but of greater appeal is Forest Glow, a recent winner, who should not be troubled by the country as he is a natural jumper. Sandy Dix and London are a likely pair, while The Hiker, who schooled brilliantly over this country last week, must not be lost sight of, the latter remark also applying to Puccini and Semiarch. Choice may rest with

Forest Glow, Diamond, London. ONSLOW STAKES Of £275; for two-year-olds; 6 furlongs Kari 8.12, Ned Cuttle 8.9, Rulette 8.7, Inver 8.3, Anion 8.2, Queen’s Counsel 7.12, Black Friar 7.7, Cheval de Volee 7.7, Palustre 7.5, Raepata 7.2, Bay Flier 7.0, Pari Passu 7.0, Lone Flier 7.0. Alytli 7.0, Gay Step 7.0, Bonstar 7.0.

Several of the youngsters have prior engagements but if reserved for this event the order of betting may

Anion, Inver, Ned Cuttle. EDEN HANDICAP Of £2 75; 1 mile Day Wind 8.11, Enlhcos 5.5, Sweet Rose 5.5, Valmint 5.4, Te Hai 8.3, Leo Colossus 8.3, Killadar 8.3, Teak 5.2, Little Artist S.O, Supreme Court 7.13, Pound Sterling 7.11, Shy 7.9, Loombination 7.7, Gallant Knigln 7.5, Le Grand 7.3, Captain Bruce 7.0. Dutch Girl 7.0, Hawthorn 7.0, Morning Sun 7.0, Sebrof 7.0, Solas 7.0. Te Broney 7.0.

The final item on the card will prove a poser for investors, but they may narrow it down to

Sebrof, Sweet Bose, Vabnint,
