FURTHER ECONOMIES

STATEMENT BV PRIME MINISTER MUST KEEP COUNTRY SOLVENT PUBLIC SERVICE REDUCTIONS By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, this day. Touching yesterday on his refer-, ence at the Chamber of Commerce dinner on Tuesday evening to the necessity for further economics, the Prime Minister, Hon. G. W. Forbes, said it was obvious that owing to the marked fall in the revenue of the country, due very largely to the drop which had taken place in the price of butter, it would be necessary during the coming financial year to put into operation further economy measures.

“It is essential,” stated Mr Forbes, “that the country remain solvent, and the only way to achieve that is to reduce expenditure in keeping with the reduction of revenue.” Asked if he could indicate what form the economies would take, Mr Forbes said it was too early yet to give details, but there was no doubt that there would have to be a cutting down of departmental expenditure, which would naturally involve a reduction in departmental services.
