The Hawke’s Bay eleven made a poor showing with the bat against the Englishmen and were easily beaten by an innings. Their first innings only produced 119 runs (Beck 35, not out) and the second 144. In the latter they lost eight wickets for 63, but Kavanagh 32 (not out), Nairn 31 and Bark 18 showed some vigour at the end. In all Woolley took eight wickets for 87 runs, Allom eight for 79, Nichols two for 17, Bowley one for 34 and Legge one for 15.
