ARREARS IN MAINTENANCE

CHARGE AGAINST KATIKATI RESIDENT ACCUSED REMANDED ON BAIL “That he had disobeyed an order made for the maintenance of his wife and family” was the charge preferred aaginst a young man mined Herbert Ellis Lesley, who was arrested on warrant at Rotorua and appeared at the Waihi Police Court before Mr W. H. Toy, J.P., yesterday forenoon. The arrears in payments to July 30th were given as £23 las. Mr J. B. Beeche, who appeared for complainant, a resident at Katikati, in asking for a remand till October Ist, said that the charge could not be proceeded with until the next sitting of the Magistrate’s Court in Waihi on October Bth. Counsel asked that in the event of bail being granted the amount should be a substantial one and that the court should order accused to report to the Waihi police every other day as since the order was made Lesley had twice left the district.

Sergeant D. L. Calwell suggested that if bail was not forthcoming accused should be ordered to remain in custody at the Waihi lock-up pending the hearing of the case. The remand was granted, bail being fixed in one surety of £IOO and Lesley to report to the police as asked by counsed. The alternative to the finding of bail was that accused should remain in the custody of the AVaihi police.
