WAIHI CONVENT WINS GOLDFIELDS’ SHIELD EXCITING FINAL WITH THAMES A series o£ basketball matches for the Goldfields’ primary schools shield was fought out at Paeroa on Saturday amongst players representative of fourteen different schools, including Te Aroha, Thames, Waihi, and Hauraki Plains. The Waihi Convent team, after several close games, came out with, first honours. They first met and defeated Paeroa with a good margin in their favour and then against Te Aroha they notched their second victory. The final game of the day was fought between the Waihi Convent team and Thames and this proved the most exciting match of the series. Score for score marked its progress until time was called with the totals at 11 points each. Within the two extra minutes allowed to play off the Convent, amid the greatest excitement, scored two points to one by Thames, thus winning the handsome and much coveted trophy.
