THE FOOTBALLSEASON

FINAL FOR SHAREBROKERS' COP WAIHI TAKE THE TROPHY NGATEA BEATEN 17 TO 3 The Waihi junior Rugby representatives will hold the Sharebrokers’ Cup for another season they having defeated Ngatea (Hauraki Plains) in what proved to be the final game for possession of the trophy on Saturday afternoon by 17 points to 3. A high wind marred the play to some extent, but the contest was keen, fast and interesting throughout, with at times bright attacking work on both sides, the visitors showing better form than the margin of points in favour of Waihi suggests. Almost immediately after the kick off White (Ngatea) sustained injuries necessitating his retirement and McPherson went on in his place. Waihi quickly adopted aggressive tactics and attacking strongly Rogers crossed over near the goal posts, Fallon adding the extra points —Waihi 5, Ngatea 0. Returning to Ngatea territory following the midfield kick a penalty gave the home players another scoring chance and Campbell landed a nice goal—Waihi 8, Ngatea 0. Thence on till the close of the spell the ball was kept on the move, but the defence on both sides held and the bell sounded without alteration to the score. With the change-over Waihi had the benefit of the wind and had their opponents busy defending, Ngatea being compelled to force three times in rapid succession. Then Ludwig got across the visitors’ chalk mark but ■was called back for a breach and from the five-yards scrum a penalty kick was awarded to Waihi. Campbell’s shot at goal failed and half time soon came with the figures still unchanged.

SECOND HALF Having the wind against them on resuming Waihi adopted defensive tactics, and for some time stemmed the onslaught of the visitors, who, however, were finally rewarded. Breaking away from near midfield Car beat several of the home men cleverly and scored a nice try near the posts. This was not converted — ■Waihi 8, Ngatea 3. Ngatea continued to press until Johns secured possession and turning defence into attack scored the best try of the day near the corner peg. Campbell missed the cross bar with his kick — •Waihi 11, Ngatea 3. The same player went over again shortly afterwards but the ball was ordered back for an infringement and scrummed five yards in. Even play followed till the bell. Attacking again, with the wind with them in the closing quarter Waihi added two more tries. The first was scored by Steel —Campbell's kick .striking the upright—and the second by Ludwig close on the call of time—a good try. Fallon was entrusted with the kick but missed and the game ended in favour of Waihi, by 17 points to 3. The match was capably controlled by Mr J. Mannix. The “curtain raiser” was between the Waihi and Paeroa schoolboys, and was won by the local team by 16 points to 8. The winning score was made up of four tries, Luther and Seath each scoring twice and Bartley converting two. For Paeroa Coxhead scored a try and added the extra points, and Bourne also crossed Waihi’s line.
