AMAZING SPEED BY BRITISH FLYER 355.8 MILES PER HOUR HANDICAPPED BY WEATHER Australian and N.2. Cable. LONDON, September 10. An attempt to create a new air speed record over 3 kilometres (1 mile 1520 yards was made to-day at Calshot by British pilots in an effort to better the time of Major di Bernhardt's record of 318.62 miles an hour. It is officially announced that Lieutenant Orlebar created a world’s record speed lof 355.8 miles an hour. Flight-Lieutenant Stafford's speed was 336.3. Lieutenant Orlebar’s best lap was 368.8 miles, but the return laps against the wind lowered the average. British Official Wireless. RUGBY, September 10. Flight-Lieutenant Orlebar flew the Superraarine Rolls-Royce S 6 in which Captain Waghorn won the Schneider’Cup, while Flight-Lieuten-ant Stainforth flew the GlosterNapier 6, which did not take part in the Schneider Cup race. Lieutenant Orlebar made four flights over a 3-kilometre course, while Lieutenant Stainforth made five. The former’s feat is a particularly brilliant one in view of the handicap Imposed by bad weather. If conditions are propitious it is confidently believed that he will exceed his present record by at least 15 miles an hour.
