Fast play, somewhat in favour of the home side, followed and in a melee Masters (Paeroa) was injured and had to be Then the visitors were pushed baca and after Fallon had had a shot at goal from a penalty without result, the local pack broke away and had their opponents defending near tie line where Verran pulled them up with a fine save. Thence on till a few minutes of the whistle the ball travelled up and down the field without material advantage to either team until a free kick against Waihi gave Paeroa a chance right in front of the posts. Poland took the shot, the ball grazing the bar and going over —Paeroa 3, Waihi 0. On resuming Waihi opened up aggressively and after pressing for some time were rewarded, Warne securing possession and scoring under the posts after beating several Paeroa backs in good style. With the wind behind them the local men' were most of the time attacking and after Paeroa had been twice compelled to force down they got away with a fine passing rush, which looked like yielding a score, but were called back for offside play almost on the line. From the resultant scrum Paeroa were penalised but Campbell’s kick fell short, and after even battling for some minutes the bell was rung with the figures unchanged. With two points to the good and the wind now against them, Waihi adopted defensive tactics during the greater part of the closing quarter, and in the early stages the visitors made strenuous efforts to retrieve their position, but the defence held, and a mark by Warne gave relief to Waihi in one of the most dangerous onslaughts. Back came Paeroa and they looked all over like scoring when Waihi were penalised In front of the posts, but the ball hit the crossbar and bounced back into play. With but a few minutes to play Waihi worked their way into their opponents’ territory and Johns brought the attacking movement to a successful issue with a nice try in the corner. Radford failed to add the extra points and the home men ran out winners by 5 points —8 to 3. Mr J. Mannix capably controlled the match. Both teams being short-handed the “‘curtain raiser” between Mataura thirds and the High School was not played. The Waihi senior fifteen played Paeroa (at Paeroa) in the Poland Cup competition, Johns winning the match for the visitors with two penalty goals—Waihi 6, Paeroa 0. The play on both sides was below representative form.
