BRITAIN'S AIR SPEED HOPES

WORLD’S RECORD OVER STRAIGHT COURSE ATTEMPT TO BE MADE TO-DAY Australian and N.Z. Cable. LONDON, September 8. The Schneider Cup victory does not represent the goal of Britain’s air speed hopes. It is learned that a new attempt will be made on Tuesday on the world’s record over a straight course. The machine will be the S 6 which was used by Captain Waghorn and will be piloted by Flight-Lieutenant Orlebar. The new Gloster-Napier machine, which was not used in the race, will be tried out by Flight-Lieutenant Stainforth, and in the event of it proving satisfactory, it will also attempt the record. The Italians are busily packing up at Calshot. It is likely that an attempt will be made at their own training course at Nice. Reviewing the race with a critical eye, Major Turner in the Daily Telegraph says that the British machines and engines won because they deserved to. The Italian engines failed because they could not sustain full throttle for more than a few minutes.
