BURIAL RIGHTS OF MAORIS
KEREPEEHI CASE IN SUPREME COURT AN INJUNCTION ISSUED By Telegraph-Press Association AUCKLAND, this day. The right of Maoris to bury their dead on a certain piece of land at Kerepeehi w’as discussed in the Supreme Court before Mr Justice MacGregor yesterday, when Reuben Connor, of Kerepeehi, butcher (Mr Garland) claimed £IOO damages and sought an injunction against Tamehane Peene, Paratene Hotene, Mark Barton and Ernest Barber, labourers, of Kerepeehi, to refrain them from trespassing and using the land as a burial ground. The action w'as not defended, and His Honour, in giving judgment said that plaintiff had proved his case. The Maoris seemed to be under the idea that they had a right to bury their dead on the property and it w'as not very clear that damage had been done, but the trespass was an aggravated one, committed after notice had been given. Plaintiff was awmrded £25 damages.
