WAIHI'S SHOPPING WEEK
ESSAY COMPETITIONS FOR THE SCHOOLS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PRIZES In order to arouse the interest of school children in the “shopping week” to be held in Waihi some time in October and to impress upon them the benefits to town and country of railway communication the Chamber of Commerce lias arranged for essay competitions for pupils attending the primary and secondary schools.
Tho subject for the primary scholars will bo the coming of the East Coast railway line and its attendant benefits to Waihi and surrounding districts, and the competition will he open to tho children of all public schools eastward to Katikati and westward to Karangahake (Waihi, of course, included) and the winner will receive a prize of two guineas. The competitor placed second will take one guinea, the third 10s 6d and there will bo three further prizes of 5s each. Scholars in the secondary department tire invited to write on tho advantages of shopping in Waihi and tho prizes will be one guinea and 10s 6d. As in the case of tho competition previously announced the prize winning essays will he published in the special supplement to be issued with tlie ‘‘Waihi Telegraph” early next month in connection with the ‘‘shopping week” movement, ami such others as may he deemed suifiolc will afterwards appear in the “Telegraph” from time to time.
