WAIHI GASWORKS TAR
QUESTION OF DISPOSAL OR USE WANTED ABOUT THE TOWN FOR NEGLECTED FOOTPATHS The question of how best to dispose of the tar produced at the Waihi gasworks was discussed at the monthly meeting of the Borough Council on Thursday evening. The solution arrived at shouid certainly meet with the approval of all ratepayers and particularly of those living ia portions cl the town where the footpaths are in .a bad state of repair. The matlei was brought before the Council in the reports of both the gasworks manager (Mr J. Learmouth) and the Gas Committee, Mr Learmonth said it seemed that all the local boroughs were getting tar from the Auckland Gas Company 1 this year, and Waihi’s only course was be dispose of its tar to the distillers or be buy casks and tanks to store it in. There was at present storage room at the works only until October 29. The committee, in presenting Mr Learmonth’s report, recommended that he be authorised to sell to the distillers sufficient tar to ensure the wells being kept at a low enough level to prevent waste by overflow. No farther storage material should be purchased. Cr. E. Morgan; The gas manager has said there is no storage for the tar. A better use for it than selling it at 6d a gallon is to tar-seal some of th.s roads and put the town in decent order. He would move accordingly. Cr J. Lockington seconded, and ' added that there were plenty of footpaths and roads in the town which needed repairing. It would certainly improve the streets and would help to keep the dust down. Cr. H. A. Pipe moved an amendment that the supervisor’s energies be concentrated on the footpaths of the town. There were, he said, plenty wanting attention, particularly at the East End. Cr. R. P. Philpot, ia seconding the amendment, said he knew of footpaths in Waihi which had not been tarred or treated since the borough had been formed. Cr. A. E. Robinson: I understood that the Council decided to concentrate on the beach road until Christmas If we are going to use the tar all the energies of the foreman and employees will be required for the purpose. Cr. Morgan said that when he had. suggested using the tar for roads he had not meant to exclude footpaths, He would incorporate the amendment in his motion and would move that the tar be used for footr paths and for sealing suitable portions of Kenny Street. The motion was carried,
