HAURAKI PLAINS COMMISSION
THE PROPOSED NEW COUNTY. \ OPPOSED BY OHINEMURI. (Special to the Dnilv Telegraph.) THAMES, tlrs day. The sitting of the Hauraki Plains Commission, before Messrs 11. M. Skeet, and W. F. "Wallace (Commissioners) is being held at the Courthouse, Thames. The proposed new county for the Hauraki Plains absorbs 92 square miles now in Thames County, and 230 square ,m'es fiom Ohiriemuri County. Thames County is not objecting, but Ohinemuri County is opposing the proposal. A petition in favour, signed by 366 voters was put in, and a counter petition, with 87 signatures, opposing the proposal was also produced. Twenty-three persons signed both petitions. The evidence is or a lengthy nature, and will take several days. It was stated that before the drainage works were commenced the population of the Plains was 100, and it is now 2.300." The opinion was strongly expressed that farming interests west of tho Thames River should be separated, and that the mining interests on Corotnandel Peninsula be merged into one large county.
