LOST OVERBOARD
FATE of returning soldier. A most distressing fatality occurred during the voyage of the liner Ruranga which arrived at Wellington from England on Tuesday. When the vessel was about ten days out from the Home port of departure, en route: to Panama a soldier known as No. 2/1245 Gunner D. M'Dongall, N.Z.F.A., jumped overboard and was lost. Tire steamer was (immediately stopped, and endeavour, Were made to rescue the man, but he disappeared before help came. A soldie,,. who witnessed the occurrence stated that it appeared that M,Dongall made an effort to swim to the vessel, but later disappeared. It is stated that the deceased had been suffering from ill-health a few days previous to the occurrence. A court of inquiry was hold on board, and the court found that the deceased jumped overboard whilst ot unsound mind, on March 18, 1919. During its investigations the Court also discovered, it is understood, that the name M'Dongal! Avas an assumed name The correct name of the deceased could not bo ascertained.
