THAMES, this day. Tliu Hon. J. A. Millar, Minister for Railways, accompanied by Mr. M. Homiyiii' (general manager of railways), ami Mr, Waitc (tralh'o manager, Auckland district, arrived at Thames last night on. a departmental visit, To-day lie inspected Price's foundry, where .iomo largo locomotives to tho order of the (lovernment are being constructed. In (lie course of conversation Mr Millar mentioned that tho Railway Departmeat were replacing 531b rails with 701b rails on the main lines, and 401b rails with 531b rails on branch lines. Last year 100 miles of rails had been improved and strengthened. As to the Addington inquiry the Milliliter declined to make any further statement, but said that the crux of the question was that, as already stated, that locomotives were being manufactured by private firms-at less cost than what could be done at Government works, and that this matter should bo inquired into. Mr. Millar left for, Itotorua at 11 o'clock. Ho I lieu proceeds to Wanganui, I'almerstoii North, and Wellington. '

HON. DUDDU TO VISIT AUCKLAND AUCKLAND, this day. The Hon. D. Ruddo, Minister for Public Health, will pay a visit to tto Auckland district at tho beginning of March. The M'uister will also give his attention to other local mutters of a more or less private nature.

The recent wool sales had the effect of relieving the stringency of the money market, and ho expects that tho present depression, so far as tho South Island is concerned, will pass away in a few months.
