OUR readers may be aware that a new two wire telegraph line has lately been laid along the main road from Athenree (o Waihi, superseding the four wire "line via Whangamata and the coast of Hiknlaia. The fact that messages from the Kutikaii telephone station to Waihi, etc., can only be sent via Tanranga came up for discussion at Saturday's meeting of the Katikati Uoad Board, when the! Waihi Borough Council was asked to join in asking Government for telephono connection between the two offices. Want of money has been urged, but the new line, having from two to five times the number of poles in a given distance than tho old lino, which has carried twice the number of wires for over thirty years; and a totally neodloss deviation to follow the county road throughout Katikati having been deoided upon, it, would seem that money can be be spent royally if the public convenience is overlooked, The wire required is idle on tho posts half-way, and through tho gorge » wire from tho disused const line could l)d laid for a few pounds were not tho Department so notoriously determined to discourage the use of telephones to the utmost.
