Wfi thoroughly coincide with the correspondents who haye written to us suggesting that the places where milk is kept by the people who vend it should be inspected by the authorities, and suuiples of the milk analysed. As far us the dairies go we except, of coarse, the only dairy that is open to the public view, We believe it is well adapted for the keeping of milk, and believe also it is always as clean as it should be. But there are dairies and dairies, and from all we can hear an inspection of some of them would rebiilt in disclosures that would be interesting. Wo have heard quite enough also to lead us to think that if analyses were made of some of the milk sold for consumption the results would astonish the public. Milk supplied from the dairies is a huge factor in the food of the infant portion of the population, and the authorities should therefore see to it that the quality is such that the health of infante is not impaired by this article of food* If all of the milk sold in Waihi for consumption is up to the standard the sellers should have no fear of an examination analytically, and such an examination, if it proved that tho milk was pure, would allay much of the fear entertained by consumers that tho quality is inferior, And as tho feeling appears to be strong that a good deal of the milk sold daily in tho borough is unfit for consumption, we strongly urge that samples bo taken and put to the test. Good milk is just as necessary to the health of infants as good wator is to the health of adults, and the pity is that a borough which is seeing so well after a supply of pure water for the residents generally should close its eyes to the quality of what is. food for the infants. We believe that in most of the boroughs analyses are made periodically of the milk Hold to the public, and wo aro sorry to ttud that Waihi, ono of the largest in the colony, is one of the few exceptions, Wo have repeatedly eallod attention to the need of inspection of the so-called dairies, and of a test of the milk sold to the. people j for domeßiic purposes, and we can only hope that something will now ' be done. The public health, awl especially that of the infant, portion, i demands that action should be taken.
There is no reason for believing that' the sellers of milk in Waihi aro any more conscientious than the sellers in other places, ami wo have always found that wherever the test has been matlo police court proceedings have followed, and fines been inflicted.
