YESTERDAY'S ELECTIONS
The annual election of Major and biennial election of Councillors for the Borough ' of Waihi took place yesterday. The poll was conducted by Mr W. M. Wallnutt, Ke- j turning Officer, and the following assistants :—Deputies, Messrs Max D. King, J. W. Smith, and Geo. Touge ; poll clerks, Messrs W. D- Buddie, S. Piggin, W. F. Seymour and G. Portzer; uaher, James Galbraith; ballot box keepers, W. Clark* andT. Gardner ; number clerk, W. Simms. More congenial weather could not -have been desired. It was beautifully fine the whole day, which no doubt tempted many to come out to record their vetes who in other circumstances would not have troubled to do so. A feature of the election was the presence in the street and in the vicinity of the polling booth of so many ladies, a number of whom appeared to take as livaly an interest in what was going on as the. men. From early in the morning till the closing of the booth, at 7 o'clock in the evening, the women folk were much in evidence, and were to be seen rubbing shoulders, so to speak, with the crowd as familiarly as the men folk. Their vote yesterday was, there cau be little doubt, a big factor in the result of the Mayoral and Councillors elections. The votsng was very steady during the forenoon and in the earlier part 'of the afternoon, and at 4 o'clock, just before the day shift from the mines put in an appearance, close upon 700 votes bad been recorded. From that hour up to the moment of closing a steady stream of people passed through the ball. During chat time over 500 votes were recorded, the returning officer and his stall having as much asthey could manage to cope with the demands of the voters. The total number of votes recorded 1241. There wore 18 informal^votes for the Mayoral and 24 for the Council election. The Mayoral election, which was fought out between Mr Thomas Gilmour and Mr O. J. Saunders, resulted in Mr Gilmour being returned by a majority of 369, the voting being 797 for the former and 428 for the latter. At 25 minutes past 7 o'clock the Returning Officer declared the result of the poll as follows : Thomas Gilmour 797 C. J. Saunders ... ... 428 Informal—l 6 Majority 369 The announcement was received with cheers. Mr GilmOur briefly addressed the crowd, expressing his thanks for having again been re urned at the head of the poll. He fully recognised the high and honourable position in which they had thought fit to place him, and he hoped to merit the confidence they had reposed in him by electing him to the chief magistrate of the town. He h»lejin the past endeavoured to do his best, andPhe intended doing his best in the future. The election that day had been fought out fairly between himself and Mr Saunders, and he hoped: that, the result would not interfere with the relations hitherto existing between, them. (Applause.)
Mr. Saunders thanked all those who had that day recorded their votes in his favour, k and though defeated he looked forward to a similar contest m the future, when he hoped the result would be different. He had nothing to say against the manner in which the election had b«en contested that day. It had been a straight-out fight, and he bad lost. As far as he war, personally concerned the result of the poll would make no difference in respect of the existing relations between himself and Mr Gilmour. (Applause). ELECTION OF COUNCILLORS At 10.10 p.m the returning officer declared the following results : H. A. McCarthny ... ... ... 796 D. Donaldson ... ... ' ... 746 J.
