TffE establishment of a public school at the eastern end of Waihi is a matter deserving of some attention, especially when the time for the annual meeting of householders
is approaching. Some years ago residents of Waihi East petitioned the Education Board {or a school on the ground that there was a large number of children of school age 'residing in the district, and that the distance from' the main school was too groat, especially in wet weather, for children of tender years lo walk, The request was backed up by the School Committee, and a site of two acres was secured in a suitable position. The local committee has evet since kept the matter steadily in view, and it has been discussed at almost »every meeting for the past two years, The Education Board bas been written to time after time on the subject, with but little result until lately, At first the Chief Inspector reported somewhat adversely against, the proposed Behoof but some limo ago he sent in a favourable report, and the Board of Education came to the conclusion that a school was needed. They therefore asked the Government for a grant of £&9O in order to build an infant school in Waihi East, but the request for funds has so far not been complied with, The committee have lately written directly to the Right Hon. the Premier, who is, among other things, Minister for Education, and, we understand, intend interviewing him on the subject when he visits Waihi. We hope that their efforts will' be successful, for there can hardly be two opinions about the necessity for at least an infant school in the eastern part ot Waihi. It would, we thiuk, be advisable for the residents of Waihi East, and especially those who have children of school age, to waken up somewhat from tho .ipathy whisk has lately possessed thousand 6how that they strongly Bnpport the efforts which the committee are and hm been making. The rapidly increasing population of Waihi renders it a certainty that before very long a B econd school will bo built, for-the present school, large though it is, in already practically full, and it is hardly likely that the Board wil '.'§. '
further iuM 10 it piovided that the residents as well as the committee make it clear that another school is absolutely necessary. Nevertheless, it will be just as well for the people interested not to take things too much for granted, but to bestir themselves with the view of preventing mistakes and of obtaining the much-needed Waihi East School as soon as possible.
