TENNIS

ST. JOHN’S CLUB.

The above Club held their annual opening on Saturday, last, when about 70 players put in an appearance. Mr' G. McCaul (patron;, in a very appropriate speech, declared the seven courts open. A progressive tourney then followed and continued until about 4.30, when the rain prevented any further play. Trophies were kindly donated by Messrs J. Anderson and M. Lampe, and the playing off for the above will take place early on Saturday afternoon next. General play will then follow. A very dainty afternoon tea was supplied by the ladies under. the supervision of Mesdames Bland and Wagstaff and Mieses De LUen, Bain', Bland, Calver and Hood-

Quite a number of new promising players wore on the courts, and the season points to ar highly successful one.

Ladder mtaches are already spoken of and nothing does more good in promoting the standard of play. The courts have rolled out very well for their first coat of asphalting, .and are a great improvement on the old St. John's courts. The committee hope to get the final coat of tar on during the early part of the season without any interruption of play.
