ALLEGED SCANDAL
RAILWAY DEPARTMENT CLEARED. , BY COMMISSION OF INQUIRY. (By Telegraph—Special to "Heralih”) WELLINGTON, Nov. 22. For several days rumours have been current an alleged scandal in connection with a large, purchase of bush country by' the Railway Department in the North Island. The matter came to the knowledge of the Commissioner of Railways, who set up a Departmental Commission of Inquiry, comprising Messrs Thompson and Riddell, Stipendiary Magistrates. Their report, I understand, completely clears the Department or any other person of any suggestion of improper practice, and shows the transaction to have been perfectly sound from a business point of view. Your correspondent endeavoured to obtain particulars of the Commission’s report, but this is not being made public as the inquiry was purely Departmental. ' !
