This order obtained till the first bend was reached, when rough water was met with. Both were rowing a good swinging stroke. Hannan still kept the advantage, Nearing the Wairau shed, Hannan struck a snag andl momentarily lost ground. Coming to half-way point, the wind and current drove the boats to the southern; side. Hannan here was four or five lengths ahead. Getting too -closie in, FogwelT fouled the bank, which checked his progress. Recovering, he started after Hannan, reducing the gap to about a couple of lengths. Both men had quickened their stroke, Hannan responding to every challenge. Coming into smooth water, ' Fogwell started to move up. Rowing a quicker stroke, the Australian made a great effort, but Hannan kept his advantage, winning by a length and a half clear water.
