By “ACHILLES.” Mr Dlic Shannon has been appointed judge for the Pahiatua Racirig Club’s rest meeting. Mr Shannon has revived a very complimentary letter from the Masterton Racing Club, who were more than satisfied with his work at their recent meeting. A correspondent, who -s evidently a believer in the totalisator as a -means of raising revenue', has (says the Sydney Daily Telegraph) forwarded particulars of a scheme which. he, and doubtless many others, would like to see worked in connectron with the Sydney Cup or Melbourne Cup of next year. It is no less than a. continuous tote on one or other of those races, and it should meet with-at least the approval of those turf speculators who are always eager to back their fancy the moment the weights are declared. Our correspondent suggests that a tote be opened simultaneously with the appearance of the entries, and continued until the day of the race, the backers of the first four horses in the race to participate according to the percentages to- be agreed upon. The proposer of this novel scheme suggests that the results should be issued daily, and is of opinion that if those who now patronise the ring were to support it as- they do the fixed price form ' of wagering, the result would be something enormous, as doubtless it would, and very large dividends might accrue. Our coi. respondent does not see why there should be any difficulty in the successful working of a continuous tote. The machine is legalised, and he suggests that a central office be secured for, the receipt of investments. The proposal may be worth proper consideration in the right quarter. Gloaming has not done much work since the close of the- Riccarton carnival. It is probable that he will be sent north for the Feilding meeting, where he is engaged :n the Feilding Stakes and the Oroua Stakes. Arrowsrruth looks well after his recent racing.. He Is a daily visitor to the course, but is being confined to walking exercise. There is no need to bustle him along at present, but ha jwill soon be in strong work again, with a view to engagements at the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting. Amythas has been blistered, and ha will be given a rest for a couple of months. He will remain in his old quarters at F. D. Jones,’ where he will run out in the padlock during the day and be stabled at night. The big horse is quite sound at present. Kilrusli, who had to be eased up on the eve of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting, with the result that he had to forfeit his engagements, is Ijeing Racket about and seems to be sound again. F.. Christmas will probably give him a little easy work next week, with a view to determining whether he is well enough to go on with or if a spell will he needed. . Anf arian, who won three • races on Melbourne courses within the last fev) weeks, and is at least the best juvenile ip Victoria, has proved a remarkably successful investment for his owner. "Whether Mr “B. 0. Bennett” is a betting owner or not is doubtful, but in stakes alone Antarian has won him £3165 in return for the 260 guineas paid for the youngster as a yearling. According to a report from Melbourne, an offer of 6000 guineas was refused for the colt after he had distinguished himself at the Y.R.C. meeting. . V
