GIRL STOWAWAY.
TEN DAYS IN A BLACK HOLE. Jean Tucker, aged 22, au 1 Englishwoman, living 7 at Portsmouth, was discovered as a stowaway when the American liner ss. Philadelphia arrived at New York .recently. She had spent ten days in a black hole, four feet by six, flooded a foot deep with salt water, next to the ship’s plates (according to the Dundee Advertiser). Hhe sad been hidden there by Edward Manning, a fireman, who had brought her aboard at Southampton, tolling her he would commit suicude unless she came to toe United States with him to many him. When dragged out of too hole, toe girl was in a fainting condition. She was clad in engine-room dungarees. She was sent to Ellis Island, where she will be detained until the Philadelphia sails again for England cm Saturday. The ship’s officers heard -there was a stowaway aboard during the voyage, and searched the ship thoroughly. They did not discover the girl, because they did not believe it possible for a ffuman being to live in the hole in whith she was hidden. *' ! Manning’s actions in seeking women’s clothing for his companion aroused suspicions, however, and to© girl was disicoveml when Manning went to get her after the. vessel had docked. He was arrested, and charged with violating too immigation laws in attempting to smuggle in an alien.
