EELS.
To the Editor. Sir, —In reading your,_ paper of even date, I notice a paragraph relating to the mystery, of eels, ■which says that eels live and feed and grow under our eyes without reproducing their kind. This is wrong. I have on, several occasions seen what appears to me to be what Dr William A. Her dm an is looking for, and that is the proof, of how eels, breed. They breed in the fresh water streams, and it was by accident that I first got proof of tjiis. I have not made a study of eels, but if you direct me to anyone that is doing so, I think I am sure of convincing him that my statement is correct. The first proof was an eel taken from the Mangatainoka Eiver about fifteen years ago, and later One from the Manawatu. I. spoke to an old resident of Pahiatua (Mr W. Saunders) of my discoverey at the time, and he said this was worth knowing, and" advised me to report to the Wellington Times, which I did not, as it seems strange v to me ‘that people who have been studying this subject have not met with success.—l am, etc., JAMES EOBEETSON.
