SERIOUS SEQUEL.

TO DOMESTIC DIFFERENCES HUSBAND ATTACKS WIFE. AND THEN ATTEMPTS SUICIDE. Early yesterday morning the police received a call to No. 228, a house iu the Avenue in the block between Ingeatre . and Plymouth Streets, where it was reported that ft labourer named Stephen Harris had made a murderous attack on his wife, and then attempted to take hie own life. It is alleged thaj; the couple had had domestic differences on Saturday night, end occupied different rooms. Yesterday morning Mrs Harm* father (Mr A< Q. Whibley) took a cup of tea to his son-in-law and daughter and other members of the household, and then went out into the garden. Lctef he heard screaming in the house, and on rushing in found his daughter with her throat cut. Harris then drew the razor across his own throat, making a slight cut, and later went into another room, where he evidently made a further attempt to end his life. Medical aid was at once sought by Mr Whibley, and Dr. Williams and Constables O'Donghue and Steer arrived promptly on the scene. It was found that Harris,, who was lying on a bed, had severed his windpipe with a razor, and no time was lost in having him conveyed to the Hospital in the ambulance, Fortunately, Mrs Harris’ injuries were less severe, and, beyond a gash in the throat, no vital spot had been touched. She also had an abrasion over the eye, believed to have been caused by a hammer found in the room, Harris is about 42 years of age. It is anticipated that it will be about three weeks before he has sufficiently recovered to appear before the Court to answer a charge of alleged attempted murder. It is reported that some little time ago he met with a severe accident and had not fully recovered from its effects.
