STATISTICAL RETURNS.
DELAY IN FOENISHING. LEADS TO CONVICTIONS. At the Court this morning, before Mr Wyvern Wilson, S.M., W. A. Grace was charged with failing to send in trade returns by the time stipulated in the Act. Mr Hutton appeared for the Crown. Defendant stated that he had not deliberately attempted to omit' to send in the returns. He was unable to supply certain details, and had sent the form on to the secretary of the Coromandel Granite Co. The latter filled in a portion of the returns, and then sent it back, hence the delay. The Magistrate dealt with the case in, a similar manner to those recently before the Court, and convicted defendant, and ordered him to pay costs 7s and solicitor £3 3s . Samuel J. Price, carpenter, Waverley, was charged with failing to send in income returns to the Commissioner of Taxes by the stipulated time. Defendant admitted the offence by letter, and was fined 40s, with costs 7s, and solicitor .£3 3s. A similar information was laid against Wiliam Pitcher, a retired farmer, who also pleaded guilty, and wag ordered to pay 40s, with costs 7s and solicitor £3 3s. All the returns in the above-named cases have since been furnished.
