ROWING
OPENING OF SEASON AT UNION BOAT CLUB. The old saying that “Nothing succeeds like success” was never better exemplified than on Saturday last, when the above ciub opened the 1920-21 season. Last season was the most successful in the history of the club, and the new season was opened in the most favourable circumstances. The weather was ideal for the event, and the members and friends turned up in large numbers. The president, Mr Alf Gray, welcomed all present and thanked the members of Aramoho and Wanganui Clubs for assisting. The new eightoared boat was put together and manned by C. Healey (stk.), E. Hyland (7), W. Coombes (6), G. Wilson (5), H. Sharpe (4), W. Sharpe (3), C. Wadman (2), D. Corby (bow), and P. Hartshorn (cox), and was given a trial spin. She is a splendid craft to row in, and it is to be hoped that an opportunity will come along when a Union crew will be trying her pace against other crews. Entries were invited for sprint fours, to be rowed from the town bridge to rhe shed. Enough names for eleven i rows were handed in, and crews at follow- were drawn: Ahern (stk.>. Faber, Mooseman, E. Gray and AY. McGonaglfl acted as starter and judge respectively. Afternoon tea was handed round by lady friends. Last Wednesday week the president of the dub, Mr Alf. Gray, presented Mr J. Cotterill with a token of esteem from the members on the occasion of his marriage. The presentation took the form of a handsome oak clock and silver jam dish. Mr Gray feelingly referred to “Jim’s” career as a member, and mentioned that not only had he won numerous races, from youths to seniors, but was stroke of champion fours on three occasions, had won the pairs twice, and was stroke of the crew which won the Australian Club championship fours at Hobart. Mr Cotterill, thanked the members and remarked that, although living 94 miles up the river, he would still take an interest in and watch the future doings of the club. The attention of members is called to the entry list for the club fours posted Tn the shed, and intending competitors are requested to enter their names without delay.
