BREACH OF FAITH CONDEMNED By Telegraph—Preas Aseu.—Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association* Received—August 27, 9.45 a.m. LONDON, August 25. The British Australasian Society, in a letter to the newspapers in reply to Lennon’s speech, say that the Queensland Government’s action is a repudiation pure and simple. At the meetings with Premier Theodore there was no suggestion of interfering with Queensland’s self-governing powers, but it was made clear lo the Premier that a breach of faith would ho ruinous to the, credit of governments as well as individuals, and the, one sure road to the restoration of credit is by repealing the Land Amendment Act and restoring the status quo ante. Premier Theodore offered to repeal the Act, but coupled the offer with tho intimation that the Government would immediately introduce an Act taxing these particular leaseholds to the same extent as they would have' suffered by the breach of the Government in their lenses. Thus Ihe Government professed to keep faith in the letter while deliberately breaking it in spirit. This offer was coupled with the suggestion that the Society join with him in an announcement in the Press that his Government had done the right thing and that we were satisfied. Naturally we refused to ho parties to any such hollow deception. The letter concludes; “Tho Lieut.-Governor is only throwing dust in tho electors’ eyes when he tries to lay on the Queensland delegation or certain London financiers the blame that rests in fact solely on tho shoulders of the Queensland Government owing to a deliberate breach of faith.”
