TRAMWAY PLANT

PROGRESS OP WORK. The tramway power-house is a scene of activity at the present time, everyone being busy in getting the plant ready to resume the service. The overhaul and repairs to the gas producer plant are just about completed, and will be finished this week. The Kapler engine has been completed, and the finishing touches are being made to the work of connecting pipes and fittings. The installation. of the recently-purchas-ed engines has necessitated a complete rearrangement of the gas, water, and air pipes, and it is this work which is now being carried out. It is anticipated that a run will be got out of the Napier engine in the next few days. It has not yet been definitely decided by the Council whether a service will be run on this engine, or whether the supply for private consumers alone will be undertaken. The engine is of the vertical type, four-cylindered, set in pairs, one on top of the other. No advice has been received from Napier as to the time when the Council will be able to obtain possession of the second engine. With regard to the repairs to the No, 3 engine, advice was received by the Tramways Engineer;) Mr Talboys, from Wellington to the effect that the recent trouble at the waterfront had interfered wih the progress of the work, and overtime had been reduced on the job. Nevertheless, it was by the Wellington engineers that one, if not two, of the cylinders would be returned to Wanganui early next week. Everything is now in readiness to replace these when they arrive, and the work of re-erecting the engine can then, be proceeded with. Opportunity is being taken to re-paint the interior of the engine-room, and this work is now being carried out. The oars are also being overhauled, and some are being re-painted and re-varnished. Possession was taken this week of another car body sent by the makers from Christchurch. When the service is once moro restored, it should be in first-class order and condition and even more efficient than it has been in the past. I
