TIDAL WAVE.
ALARMING EXPERIENCE AT . HOKITIKA. (Per United Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, August 26. Word was received from Hokitika tonight that the sea has inundated the northern end of the town. A heavy nor’ wester blew all day, and as the tide reached its zenith, what is described as a veritable tidal wave came up past houses at 7 to-night on the beach side of Revell Street, and the water reached to the Catholic Church in the third block hack from the waterfront. People were alarmed, and have had to abandon their houses to-night on the west side north of Revell Street, which has piles of timber and driftwood on the road. The sea came up right-of-ways as high as window-sills. All outhouses on the beach were demolished byi several waves up to 7.30 p.m. The sea after each receded a good distance. It is hoped the wind will moderate by to-morroVs tide.
