SCULLING
By “VICTOR.” On Saturday, Alf Felton and E. Barry row on the Parramatta for the world’s championship. After racing in the Sydney Handicap, both Felton and Barry took a week’s spell from hard work on the river, but had resumed solid training before the last mail left Sydney. The form shown by the two men in the handicap event is said to have pleased their respective supporters, and both sides are very confident. Everything points to a splendid race he'ng witnessed between the Australian end the Englishman. Barry has greatly impressed such excellent judges as W. Beach, Jim St anbury and others by the jo.ee he has been showing, and there is no doubt as to his staying ability, that is, if lie is as sound a man as he was a few years ago. It is true he is well up in years now to be competing for the world’s championship. but ho has always taken great care of himself. Felton has the advantage of being considerably younger, and many hold that this will turn the scale in his favour, but this remains to be seen. As showing the differences of opinion held as to the probable result, I may state that two Wanganui friends, who have just returned from Sydney, where they saw the scullers training, have expressed opjiosite views as to the chances of the two men. One tells the writer he regards Barry as a sure winner, while the other holds that Felton is too fast for the Englishman. Paco alone will not win the race, however, even if the Australian is the faster man, which some of the best judges in Sydney do not believe. It will probably be a gruelling race for a mile and a half, when stamina will tell, and here it may be that Barry will prove superior—that is, if he is the sculler he was a few years ago.
