WANGANUI TROTTING CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Wanganui Trotting Club Was held on Saturday evening. Mr A. G. Bignell presided over a good attendance. Report.—The following is a . copy of the annual report:— Your committee have pleasure in submitting their Eleventh Annual Report and Balance Sheet and in congratulating members on another successful year. The new course at Wanganui East has been completed and gives every promise of being a first-class track. The totalisator house and stables have been erected. Plans and specifications for an up-to-date grandstand and conveniences have been prepared, btit the Government regulations restricting building operations have prevented the Club from proceeding with the work. Owing to the very wet weather it was impossible to hold pur meeting on the new course. This was very unfortunate, as all arrangements had been made to make the opening meeting one worthy of the occasion. The meeting was held on the Wanganui Racecourse, and your Club is greatly indebted to the Wanganui Jockey Club for their kindness in coming to our rescue and granting us the free use of their appointments. The meeting was a success la every way. The fields were good, and the investments on the totalisator were easily a record, the total falling just short of £50,000. The Club’s membership is now 198, an Increase of 24 for the year. The Revenue Account shows an excess of income over expenditure of £774 15/10, and the Accumulated Funds now stand at £4379 6/-. During the year death has claimed one of the Club’s most enthusiastic committeemen, the late Mr N. B. Garner. His knowledge was of the greatest value in assisting in the arrangement of matters at the new course, and his place on the committee will be hard to fill. At the Annual Trotting Conference held in Wellington on July 13th, Mr L. Cohen was elected as a North Island representative on the Executive. The congratulations of the Club are due to Mr Cohen. Mr A. G. Bignell has been renominated for the position of patron. Mr W. Tuck is the only nomination for the position of president. For the three vacancies as vice-presidents there are four nominations: F. C. Faber, T. H. Nixon, J. W. D. Mcßeth and R. G. McNiven. Mr G. S. Vance is the only nomination for the position of hon. treasurer. The following retire from the committee:—J. R. Foster, T. E, Jefcoate, R. G. McNiven, and J. G. Swan. There are also two vacancies due to the death of Mr Garner, and the election of Mr Tuck as president. The following nominations have been received for the six vacancies:—C. B. Brodie, J. R. Poster, John Coull, T. E. Jefcoate, F. R. Jones, T. Mitchell, junr., R. G. McNiven, Jas. McLeod, C. G. Rhimes, J. G. Swan; and E. H. Whiteman. Your committee again wish to express their thanks to the Club’s honorary and paid officials, the Stipendiary Steward, the officials of the Trotting Association and Conference, the custodian of the racecourse, Mr Tucker (the Borough gardener), and the Press. In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet the chairman congratulated the Club on the substantial progress ndade during the year. The motion was seconded by Mr T. H. Nixon, who pointed out the satisfactory result of the past season, in that the excess of revenue over expenditure amounted to £774 15/10. Mr Grummitt considered that the gate receipts were too low altogether and was strongly of the opinion that the committee should curtail the issue of complimentary tickets. The report and balance sheet were then adopted. Election of Officers.—The following officers were elected: Patron, A. G. Bignell; president, W. R. Tuck; vice-presidents, P. C. Faber, R. G. McNiven, and T. H. Nixon. (On the motion of the president it was decided to place on record the Club’s appreciation of the services rendered by Mr J. W. D. Mcßeth, who did not seek re-election), hon. treasurer, G. S. Vance; committee; For the six vacancies there were 10 nominations and the ballot resulted as follows: C. B. Brodie, J. R. Poster, John Coull, T. E. Jefcoate, J. G. Swan, and C. G. Rhimes. Auditor, C. G. Webster. Thanks. —Moved by Mr Tuck and seconded by Mr Coe, “That a hearty vote of thanks be accorded the Wanganui Jockey Club for the consideration extended to this Club during the past season.” —Carried by acclamation. Appreciation.—lt was decided to place on record the Club’s appreciation of the valuable service rendered to the Club by the late Mr N. B. Garner. On the motion of Mr Coe a vote of thanks to the Club’s honorary officials was carried unanimously. The usual compliment to the chair concluded the meeting.
