THE GAME IN ENGLAND. LONDON, August 21. To-dly’s cricket results have an important baaring on the championship race. Sussex beat Surrey, the latter having the worst of the wicket. Middlesex beat Somerset. Hearn in the second innings took 5 for 28.. Notts beat Kent on the first innings. Yorkshire beat Essex. Waddington took 4 for 40 and 4 for 32. Rhodes split a finger. Lancashire beat Gloucester. The championship order now is: Middlesex, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Kent, Surrey. Batting averages: Hendren is first with 67, Hobbs second with 56/ Hearne third, Russell fifth, and Makepeace ninth. Bowling averages: Rhodes first. Woolley second, Howell sixth, Parkin eighth, Hearne eleventh, Waddington thirteenth. THE TEAM FOE AUSTRALIA. LONDON, August 19. A doctor has ordered Woolley to rest. He has been playing overmuch cricket. Russell has reached 2000 runs. Douglas, captain of the English cricket team to visit Australia, is hopeful regarding the team’s prospects. He says it looks like a winner. He does not think the bowling as strong as last team’s, but has high hopes ,of Parkin, Howell, and Hearne.
