THE POPE’S ADVICE. ROME, August 16. On the ground that the Church does not desire political martyrdoms, the Pope has wired Archbishop Mannix advising him not to attempt to land in Ireland. PROTEST BY IRISH HIERARCHY. LONDON, August 17. Thq Irish Hierarchy, in a collective protest regarding the treatment of Archbishop Mannix, says he only used his right as a citizen of the Empire to criticise the conduct of the Government and set forth fearlessly in plain, dignified language the claims of Australian democracy and the rights of his own people in Ireland.
