A SAVAGE BULLDOG
TWO HORSES ATTACKED. The remarkable scene of a bulldog savagelv attacking two horses attached to a wagon—fiercely biting their legs and endeavouring to bury its teeth in their throats —was witnessed in Sydney a week or two ago. A sergeant of police stood on one side of the horses with a baton in his band and a tramway man on tho other grasping a points hook. They struck ific dog immediately it emerged from under the horses—blows that would' have killed a man. But it still returned to the attack. Finally its skull was split with an axe. When the dog attacked them the horses reared and plunged, and it was ■with difficulty that they were prevented from bolting. Neither the attack of the tram man nor the sergeant of police with his baton, used with all his force, was successful in turning the attention of the dog from tho horses, and it was not until one of the team kicked the dog in the head, sending it sprawling ten feet away, that they had a moment’s respite. Blood streaming from a wound in its head, the dog struggled to its feet and returned to the attack as savagely as ever. The tramway man seized the dog’s tail, and dragged the animal back several feet. It did not turn on him, however, but merely wrenched itself free, and again rushed the horses. The driver of the wagon then tried to drive away from the dog, but it bounded after .the horses, and, 40 or £0 vards down the road, it caught up to them, and flew at their necks. This stopped their progress. Struck six or seven times on the head with the point-hook, it ceased its attack for a few seconds, but it returned again even when the policeman again hammered it with his baton. Then it was that the axe was used to end the dog’s assault. The horses were not seriously injured.
