THE COAL POSITION.
OFFICIAL STATEMENTS. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, February 21. The position in Wellington and adjacent districts as regards coal supplies is becoming acute. The result of the coal conference now sitting is awaited with deep interest. It is expected the conference will end to-day, though it is possible the discussion may be prolonged into nest week. A member of thg Coal Trade Committee states that their greatest worry has been to keep essential industries going. A good deal of their difficulty arose ont of the problem of so directing shipments that operations may be kept going at the cool stores. The SouAh African coal recently received by the Argon Tie is giving satisfaction as a steam coal. It has been distributed as far north as New Plymouth and Napier, mostly for the meat and dairy industries. The general manager of Railways states that great difficulty is experienced in getting supplies, and those obtained have to be used in the most careful manner in order to keep the services going to the best possible effect,
