CALEDONIAN SPORTS.

THE ANNUAL GATHERING The annual sports gathering of the Wanganui Caledonian Society was held on Cook’s Gardena on Saturday, and proved the most successful the Society has held for several years. There was a big attendance of Highland dancers and pipers, the field events were also well contested, and the running events were very successful, the fields ebing large and the running of a very interesting description, some very close finishes being fought out. Packer syds and 0. Haines Byds dead heat for second place. This was a splendid finish, Candy getting the verdict by a few indies, while Packer, Daines, and Weir were all within a feet of each other. Time, 23 l-ssec. 440 Yards—F. W. Packer 12yds 1, W. J. Candy Byds 2, B. Wilson 15yds 3. Several others ran. A very close finish, Packer just squeezing home by a couple of feet. Time, 53 2-ssec. Milo Handicap—R. Beil 45yds 1, A. Hogg 110 yds 2, W. J. Penn 95yds 3. Several others started. 801 l took the lead early, and won comfortably, though Hogg and Penn both finished well. Time, 4.41 4-ssec. 100 Yards (primary schools championship)—W. White (Gonville) 1, F. Guerney (Queen’s Park) 2, J. Ireland (Avenue) 3. Relay Race—Queen’s Park 1, Gon vide 2. Lazy stick Championship—G. Johnston defeated J. Rusooe. The points prize for the amateur events was won by F. W. Packer with a win, a second, and a dead-heat for second. FIELD EVENTS. Throwing the hammer—McDowell (81 feet) 1, McLean (80 feet) 3, Thompson (71 feet) 3. Putting the shot,—McLean (32 feet) 1, McCulloch 2, McDowell 3. Tossing the caber.—Donoghy 1, McDowell 2, O’Brien 3. Wrestling’ (Cumberland). —Anderson defeated Murphy in two straight falls. Tug-of-war.—ln the first heat Uio Maori team defeated Rusooe’s team by a small margin. In the final the police team defeated the Maori team after a hard struggle. Hid police team was: Constables Finch, R. Wilson, Grainger, O’Brien, Johnston and O’Donoghue.
