TRAMWAYMEN'S DEMANDS.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE.

Australian and N.Z. Cable Association,

WELLINGTON, January 28.

The national conference to consider the Tramway Employees’ Federation demand for a Dominion award opened today. All concerns affected, with the exception of the Auckland City Council and Auckland Union, were represented, and there was a general expression of opinion in favour of a Dominion award, and it was decided to inform Auckland of this and request the attendance of northern delegates to-morrow. The Mayor of Wellington strongly supported the idea of a Dominion, agreement, and said separate arrangements in the North and South Island would not be tolerated.

Mr Barr strenuously denied the statement that the Christchurch Tramway Board was a stumbling block to a Dominion agreement. The conference will resume to-morrow.
