PEERS PRACTICE THRIFT.
ESTATES SOLD TO TENANTS,
Steps towards thrift are being taken by quite a number of peers in England. The Duke of Portland announced with pain and regret that ho had come to the conclusion there must be a reduction in labour employed on the Wei heck estates. With the burdens of taxation and increased cost of living to be faced, everything would have to be changed, and he feared that pre-war conditions would not return in the lifetime of the present generation. ,Th© Earl of E3.lesm.ehe has warned workmen employed on his ©states and colliery properties in Worsley and adjoining districts of south-east Lancashire to look out for new jobs, as he is reducing staffs. He recently sold a considerable number of houses, farmsteads, and several publichouses. Lord Harrington, who has already sold to his tenant? farm and other lands from his estate, representing about 3200 acres, now proposes to offer 5000 acres in Gawsworth, Bosley, and other districts. The Earl of Harewood’s north Yorkshire property, of over 9000 acres, which is to be sold, includes the ancient ruins of West Harlsoy Castle; also the historical mansion, 'Stank Hall, the ancient seat of the Laeoelles, of which family the Earl of Harewood is a descendant. Estates at the foot of Plinlimmtm and at Machynlleth, which have been in the hands of the Wynn family for 200 years, have been sold by Sir Watkyn Wiljiams Wynn for h56,000. The property was bought by the tenants.
