LOCAL AND GENERAL.
A sick and benevolent fund instituted by the employees of the Waingawa Freezing Works a year or two ago, each man paying 6d a week, has 174 claims, involving a sum of £560. To-morrow (Friday) at noon, Commander Bourke, V.C., is to be tendered a civic reception at the a Council Chambers. It is hoped there will be a large and representative attendance of citizens to do honour to our illustrious guest.
One effect of the sugar shortage has been to increase prices for that universally favourite sweet, chocolate. Chocolates made in New Zealand are difficult to obtain, and the same remarks apply to other classes of locally-manufactured confectionery.
A Timaru syndicate has just been successful in drawing the second prize in Tatt’s sweep on the Bendigo Cup. The amount is £1566. The chairman of the syndicate was previously in charge of another syndicate which netted over £IOOO from the same source.
