“THE TIGER’S” GREAT SERVICES
’-Received January 22, 9.50 a.m. PARIS, January 21. The concensus of opinion is that Deschanel’s election is of really a representative character. The majority of newspapers express satisfaction with the result. Some circles propose to make Clemenceau a life-Senator, and others suggest presenting him with a large estate and castle. President Poincare, after conferring with M. Deschancl and M. Bourgeois, commissioned M. Millerand to form a Cabinet.
M. Clemenceau will no longer be able to represent France at the Peace Conference. He says he is going to Egypt in a few days, and will remain there for two months. His departure will probably entail the break-up of the secret conferences of the Council of Three. It is expected that Mr Lloyd George and the British mission will soon return to London and not return until the political position in France is cleared up. It is thought that the Fiume and Turkish problems and other grave matters are still undecided. ■ There was a moving scene in the Elysee when Clemenceau handed his resignation to President Poincaire. The latter thanked the “Tiger” for his great services. He said; “You galvanised the enfcrois of the country in difficult hours. Your tireless tenacity made final victory possible.”.
