July 8, 10 and 12—Wellington R.O. THE ENGLISH DERBY. A RECORD CROWD. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. Received June 5, 2.30 p.m. LONDON, June 4. The Derby resulted:—Grand Parade 1, Bqchan 2, Paper Money 3. There was a record crowd at the Derby. Hundreds of Australians and New Zealand soldiers motored to the course. The Royal party travelled by train, and drove from Epsom. They had a cordial reception, and the cheers were renewed an hour later when Viceroy won. Light showers at mid-day tended to make the dry ground treacherous, but did not spoil the comfort of spectators. Panther remained .a strong favourite. There was an enthusiastic demonstration w'hen the King’s horse. Viceroy, won the Stewards’ Handicap, Donoghue riding the winner at 9.4. There were nine runners. This was the first time the, King had attended a race or entered a horse for a race since the war. Panther’s recklessness delayed the start. He got away badly, and was never prominent. THE KING’S HORSE WINS. LONDON, June 4. The King’s horse won the second race on Derby Day. AUCKLAND R.C. MEETING. THIRD DAY. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 5. The A.R.C. meeting is being continued in splendid weather. There is a large attendance, and the course is in good order. Results; — Tamaki Steeplechase—Ulster 1, No Surrender 2, Jacaranda 3. Scratched: Bore and Yellow’ and White. Won by 2j lengths. Time, 6.3. Orakei Hurdles—Benzine 1, Lochella 2, Signature 3. Scratched: Swastika. Won by a length. Time, 3.22. York Welter—Alteration 1, Meltchikoff 2, Paddington Green 3. All started. Won by half a length. Time 1.43 1-5. Winter Steeplechase.—Troublesome 1, Master Lupin 2, Tenacious 3. Scratched.; Grafton Tot and Ulster. Won by five lengths. Time, 6.9. DUNEDIN J.C. MEETING. SECOND DAY. DUNEDIN, June 5. The weather is beautiful for the second day of the D.J.C. winter meeting. Results;—• Silverstream Handicap—Braid 1, Glenshine 2, Mirza 3. Scratched:— Black Mountain. Won by a neck. Time, 1.31 3-5 . Provincial Handicap—Samiel 1, Burrangong 2, Elcus 3. Scratched; Caverock. "Won by a length and a quarter. Time, 2.12 2-5. Hurdler—Jeannot 1, Naupata 2, Cima 3. All started. Won by half a length. Time, 3.54 4-5. W ingatui Steeplecha se—Silv erspire I. Kaupokonui 2. Palladio 3. Morecambe was scratched. Won by four lengths. Won by four lengths. Time, 5.42.Wairongoa Handicap—Rodshiro 1, Borodino 2, Kilmeedy 3. Scratched: Belair and Killeney. Won by a nose. Time, 1.16 1-5. Colonel Soult has finished racing, and in future is to be used as a lady’s hack in Hawke’s Bay, and a perfect one he should make. The brothers J. C. and P. S. Gleeson have made him a present to Mr W. G. Stead.
