A BULLS SENSATION.
GERMAN’ MINE "WASHED UP,
TERRIFIC EXPLOSION ON RANGITIKEI BEACH.

Quite a sensation was caused at Bnlls and district yesterday when it became known that a German mine had been washed up on Rangitikei Beach. Nobody felt inclined to make a play-toy of the huge destructive element, and were quite satisfied to watch it with curious and interested eyes from a distance. Tiie finding was reported to the police, who immediately got in touch with Eie authorities at Wellington, and four men were sent to Bulls. The experts found that the mine was in good going order, so decided to place it out of action. Tins was done this morning by a plug of dynamite and a length of fuse. The operators then had to scale for their lives, and they had fust reached a haven of safety when the exnlosion took place. The noise was terrific and was heard for mile around. At Bulls, tweW miles distant from fb scene of onera.tions the windows in Ihe houses and shops were considerably rattled. ‘
As an evidence of the destructive forces concentrated in the casing, it mav he stated that the mine tore a hole in the beach which, when measured. was found to ho 27 feet in circumference and ten feet deen. Marines will, no doubt, lie rdeased to learn that the mines east adrift in the Pacific hv the German raider Wolff have been still further reduced. The mine canned the number 1818.
