THE OPINION OP HIGH DIGNITARIES OP THE CHURCH.

It is well that |New Zealand Catholics should realise that the leaders of their Churches in other lands are amongst the foremost advocates of Prohibition. Father Mathew, the Apostle of Temperance, who was a legal suasionist as well as a moral suasionist, wrote as follows; “The principle of Prohibition seems to me the only safe and certain remedy for the evils of intemperance. This opinion has been strengthened and confirmed by the hard labour of more than twenty years in the temperance cause/' 700 CATHOLIC PRIESTS IN QUEBEC FOP. PROHIBITION. Tho following extract from the Pioneer, a well-known Canadian newspaper, shows how the Catholic Church in Canada stands witih regard to the Prohibition movement:—“A deputation waited upon Sir Lomer Grouin, Premier of Quebec. Among the speakers was Mgr, Roy, who represented the Cardinal Archbishop. He spoke strongly in favour of Prohibition. Seven hundred priests and one hundred temperance societies, representing two hundred thousand men and women, had placed themselves on record as in favour of doing away with the liquor traffic. Amongst the hundreds of eminent dignitaries who have supported the Prohibition movement are the following: Archbishop John J. Keane Archbishop Bruchesi, of Montreal Archbishop J. E. Roy, D.D., of Quebec Bishop J. Y. Regis Canevin, of Pittsburgh Bishop J. J. Hennessey, D.D., of Wichita Bishop John J. Monaghan, D.D., of Wilmington Bishop John J. Nilan, D.D., of Hartford Bishop Paul P. Rhode, of Green Bay Rt. Rev. Mgr. James E. Cassidy, of Fall River Archbishop James J. Keane, of Dubuque, lowa Bishop Loras, of Dubuque, lowa Bishop John P. Carroll, of Helena. *
