The hon. treasurer of "Our Day" appeal desires,to acknowledge £1 14s 9d from the Fire Brigade ladies. The Minister'of Defence has received cabled advice that the first portion of the 29th Reinforcements have reached their destination. During the quarter ending September 30, 1917, 287 males and 21 females were taken into custody, summoned, or apprehended at Wanganui. The body of Thomas William Hall, iig>J 84. was found in Wellington harbour yesterday. The deceased resided at I'etone. The aggregate amount sued for in the Wanganui Magistrate's Court for the quarter ended September 30, 1917, was .45647 16s Bd. Judgment was entered for £2128 10s 3d. In the House last evening, the Prime Minister announced that the Goverjiinent had completed the purchase of the Gladbrook estate of six thousand acres, in Otago. the property of the Hon. John Roberts, for subdivision amongst returned soldiers. During the past three-quarters of the present year the criminal business of the Wanganui Magistrate's Court has increased by nearly 100 cases over the same period last year. On the other hand, civil cases have decreased by 89. All members were present at the monthly meeting of the Gonville Town Board last evening, when little beyond roiitine business was transacted. The Engineer reported that the new street through the May Estate from Alma Road was x almost completed, and it was decided to ask the owner of the adjoining land to lay off tlfe road line in continuation of the street through to Smithtield Road. The matter of cutting through the hill between the two properties so as to give immediate access to the new road line was referred'to the Works Committee, with poAver to act. An opinion was received from the Board's solicitors as to the charge for water used in building operations', in which he stated that, where such was used through a meter service, he was of opinion the charge should be at Is 3d (discount 3d) per 1000 gallons.
